The Challenge

Rivers and coastal areas provide communities with rich natural resources, goods and services that sustain economic growth, contribute to societal well-being and help us meet our basic needs. Yet, these natural environments are associated with some of the most threatening natural hazards. Flooding is a global challenge being exacerbated by changes in climate, rapid increases in human population, urban development and economic growth.

With over 6 million UK properties at risk from flooding or coastal erosion, and the likelihood that this number will increase with future changes in climate, an integrated and multi-disciplinary response that brings together expertise from across the flood risk management sector - and beyond is needed.
